چکیده

Loss of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−–N) from Midwestern U.S. agricultural fields can impair water quality and be an economic loss to farmers. Winter cover crops have shown promise as a remedy, but low adoption illustrates the need for alternatives. Here, we tested whether adding carbon (C)-rich soil amendment (i.e., crude glycerol, biodiesel byproduct) increase microbial biomass (MB) promote N immobilisation under various conditions then determined when immobilised would released. We conducted laboratory incubation with full factorial combination four glycerol rates (0, +117, +468 +1872 mg C kg−1 soil), three supplemental NO3−–N +10 +40 kg−1) two soils (Clarion clay loam Sparta loamy sand). Soil inorganic (NH4+–N NO3−–N) MB were measured at seven time points, respectively, across 98 days period. Across all treatments, increased MBN in both short term (7 days; 4%–1137% compared no addition) long (98 10%–169%) decreased increasing rate glycerol. Adding caused net 21%–61% (+117 ~100% (+468 control. Some that was likely released through turnover, timing release depended on added rate. 40 showed nearly twice mineralisation than or applied – providing evidence priming. Overall, has potential use temporarily immobilise make some crop available turnover. Highlights Crude by-product, evaluated reduce nitrate. Glycerol strongly nitrate conditions. temporary, mineralised lower rates, type affected immobilisation-mineralisation dynamics.

Value-added uses for crude glycerol--a byproduct of biodiesel production

Biodiesel is a promising alternative, and renewable, fuel. As its production increases, so does production of the principle co-product, crude glycerol. The effective utilization of crude glycerol will contribute to the viability of biodiesel. In this review, composition and quality factors of crude glycerol are discussed. The value-added utilization opportunities of crude glycerol are reviewed....

Glycerol (Byproduct of Biodiesel Production) as a Source for Fuels and Chemicals – Mini Review

Currently the large surplus of glycerol formed as a by-product during the production of biodiesel offered an abundant and low cost feedstock. Researchers showed a surge of interest in using glycerol as renewable feedstock to produce functional chemicals. This Minireview focuses on recent developments in the conversion of glycerol into valueadded products, including citric acid, lactic acid, 1,3...

Improving Soil Physical Indicators by Soil Amendment to a Saline-Sodic Soil

The application of organic amendments can be an appropriate solution to reclaim and improve physical propertiesof saline-sodic soils. In this research, an experiment was performed under greenhouse conditions to study the effect ofamendments to the physical properties of loamy saline-sodic soil. The five treatments were control (withoutamendment), municipal solid waste compost (MC), vermicompost...

Anaerobic treatment of crude glycerol from biodiesel production.

In this study, we evaluated the use of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor to treat crude glycerol obtained from cottonseed biodiesel production. The laboratory-scale UASB reactor (7.0 L) was operated at ambient temperature of 26.5°C with chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations between 0.5 and 8.0 g/L. The volatile fatty acid contents, pH, inorganic salt contents and biogas p...

Characterization of Crude Glycerol from Biodiesel Production from Multiple Feedstocks

Glycerol is the principal by-product of biodiesel production. For each gallon of biodiesel produced, approximately 0.3 kg of crude glycerol accompanies. Such crude glycerol possesses very low value because of the impurities contained. As the demand and production of biodiesel grow exponentially, the utilization of the glycerol becomes an urgent topic. The make-up of crude glycerol varies depend...
